The Mustangs hit a bit of a speed bump to open the season as they fell 4-1 to Lane Tech.  The Mustangs looked well organized and showed alot of promise.  While Lane dominated much of play the Mustangs created several good scoring chances and evantually managed to score their first goal of the season when Michael K placed Andy C's cross into just inside the far post and well out of the reach of the Lane Tech keeper.  Next up for the Mustangs is DeLaSalle on tuesday as part of the LaSallian Cup.

After conseeding 13 goals in their last two games, the Mustangs came out with a new look defense.  Moving leading scorer Michael K. to the back gave Northside the composure and lift they lacked.  The move paid immediate dividens when, as the Mustangs held Prosser to one goal and really shut them down in the second half.  With strong attacking players like Jaani M, Jarrett M, Andy C, Anthony C the Mustangs could afford to move Michael K to make the move.  Down only 1-0 at the half Northside knew they could win the game and really stepped up the pressure.  Prosser couldn't match Northside's second half intensity and the Mustangs looked to take advantage.  They peppered the goal but could not beat the keeper.  Only after a prosser handball in the box was Jaani M able to level the score.  After a miscue in the back, Chris K. had to the leave the game with a yellow card, and Eric Y had to come in cold and save a penalty kick to keep the Musangs in the game.  Prosser missed wide and at the end of regulation the score remained tied 1-1.  In the shoot out Jaani M, Mike B, Andy C, Jack H, all made their shots and Chris K came up big in goal to give Northside the narrow victory.  Next up for the Mustangs is Von Steuben on Thursday at River Park.

The Varsity Boys Soccer Team looks to improve upon their record setting 8-13 season a year ago.  The Mustangs will field their most balanced team yet, and will feature an attack that is returining five starters from a year ago.  Hopefully the boys will be able to score in bunches and play the same exciting brand of soccer they displayed last fall.

Action from the LaSallian Cup
9-4-03
Northside went 2-2 in the LaSallian Cup to finish in 5th Place.  The Mustangs were led by Michael K who scored 4 goals and had 2 assists in four games.  Northside got off to a good start when they defeated DeLaSalle 3-2 on a last minute goal by Michael K.  Northside dominated from the opening kick off scoring two quick goals and looked like they had it in the bag.  Unfortunately the wheels fell off as they allowed DeLaSalle back in it with 2 second half strikes, only to see Michael grab the game winner late in regulation.

In their second game the Mustangs ran into a tough Ridgewood team and got off to a terrrible start.  Giving up a soft early goal and seeing a game tying penalty saved by the keeper.  The Mustangs were out played on their home field.  Ridgewood led 4-0 at the half.  Northside showed some pride in the second half holding Ridgewood scoreless.  Michael K. scored the only goal for Northside as they lost 4-1.

Gordon Tech made the short trip over for the third game of the tournament.  The game was wide open from the begining as both teams were desperate to score an early goal.  Northside scored first as Gordon failed to clear a corner by Jarret M. and Mike B. was able to knock home a loose ball in front of the net.  However Gordon came right back scoring two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead into the half.  Gordon scored again making it 3-1, but Northside answered with two goals of their own.  In the 70th minute Gordon Tech scored a very controversial as the ball never appeared to go in the net, and of course it turned out to be the game winning goal.

2003 CITY PLAYOFFS

10/11/2003
Saturday 9AM - Game 1
In their final First Round game of the City Playoffs, Northside took on Perenial Premier Giant AMUNDSEN. Amundsen had just been upset 1-0 by an inspired Senn team that won the group at that point. Amundsen was hanging their heads and primed for another upset, and Northside was looking forward to helping them out. Amundsen showed their early - zig zaging and penetrating right through Northside's defense. The Mustangs survived a couple of early scares and made the necessary adjustments. With five minutes to go Anthony Cecchini received a ball on the right flank and headed right to goal. He powered the ball past the keeper and gave the Mustangs a first half 1-0 lead. Northside knew they had a chance to steal a victory and did not let down the second half. They created several more scoring opportunities but Amundsen was up to the challange. When Amundsen scored on a quick counter the Mustangs looked like they might fold, but they were up to the challange today. After the Amunsen keeper handled the ball 10 yards past the box and received a red card the Mustangs really stepped up the pressure. Jarrett Miskawitz hammered home a ball in front of the net to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead and that was all they needed. Northside defeated a Premier Division team for the first time in their history and Coache Michael Keane got douced with a bucket full of water for their effort. Next up for the mustangs is North Shore Country Day in the first round of the state playoffs.

Saturday 10AM - Game 2
After losing a tough match to Senn the Mustangs had to turn around and face Kenwood in the second of back to back first round city playoff action. Fortunately the Mustangs were already warmed up and comming off a good second half against Senn, because they came out looking to score. Michael Keenan cut right through the Kenwood defense on a great individual effort and opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Jarrett Miskawitz then scored to put the Mustangs up 2-0. The Mustangs had it on cruise control early, and unfortunately Kenwood took advantage and managed to get one back just before half time. The Mustangs looked to be in another battle but Northside continued to play at the same pace and Kenwood could not match their effort. Chris O'Sullivan and Jaani Malhance effectively put Kenwood away scoring early in the second half on their way to a 7-1 victory.

Saturday Noon - Game 3
Northside came out more aggressively than they have all season. They really looked like they had something to prove. Michael Keenan and Justin Rivera set the tone with some crushing tackles, and Anthony Cecchini and Jaani Malhance hustle really put the pressure on Senn's defense. Jarrett Miskawitz was put through on a long ball and had a clear scoring opportunity snuffed out when Senn's last man tripped him from behind. On a questionable call the referees did not give the stright red but only showed the yellow. The Mustangs shot the free kick over the cross bar and Senn had safely survived the scare. The Mustangs continued to pressure and look the better team but a miscue in the back lead to a break away goal that Chris Keenan could do nothing about. The Mustangs pushed forward but Senn countered just before half time and took a 2-0 lead. The Mustangs knew they were in trouble - their playoff lives were at stake, and they were determined to score. They pushed everyone forward and really dominated from the start of the second half. Michael Keenan almost scored five minutes in when he headed Jarrett's corner kick on goal but it was saved off the line. Anthony Cecchini and Michael Burk almost scored from shots just outside the 18, but the Senn keeper was too strong. The mustangs outshot Senn 22-5 but had nothing to show for it. Next up for the Mustangs: Kenwood in first round robin play.
